The plot of St Mary's Cathedral Higher Secondary School was bought from Mr Suresh Mani Solo in 1967 when Kohima Diocese was under the Dibrugarh Diocese. Rev Fr Bernick SDB acted on behalf of the Catholic Church, made a sale deed with Mr. Suresh Solo, and got the present land at Rs.4000.00 (Four thousand only). However, the school construction began in 1991 and was completed in 1992. Fr OC Abraham was appointed the first headmaster. In 1992, the structure was completed, and in February, Bishop Abraham, the then Bishop of Kohima-Imphal Diocese, blessed and inaugurated the school building with four classrooms and 126 students enrolled from LKG to Class II. Ms. Sedesseno Isabella Theyo and Ms. Vilekhole Vilma were the first teachers. The Rangapahar military helped the school to level the ground. In 1998, the Directorate of Education permitted the School to upgrade to class VIII. In 2001, the NBSE enabled the opening of Class IX and X, and the school sent the first batch of Class X students in 2003 to write matric exams. Further, the school was upgraded to higher secondary arts in 2012, and in 2021, the Science stream was added.
